Performing a "Clean Boot" on the DC4 or DC5 data collector

It may be necessary to reset a DC4 or DC5 data collector to its factory defaults.  This may be necessary if the device is displaying a different Device ID in the "About" screen than was used to register the software, or if the device is having trouble recognizing the GSM module (so that the cell phone feature won't work)

1. Back up all your files, this procedure will remove FieldGenius completely

  • Make safe copies of all projects and Automaps in: Program Files\MicroSurvey FieldGenius\FG Projects
  • Copy your instrument settings and options from: Program Files\MicroSurvey FieldGenius\Programs\msurvey.ini
  • Copy any custom coordinate systems you may have created from: Program Files\MicroSurvey FieldGenius\Programs\Mapping
  • Copy your registration file: Program Files\MicroSurvey FieldGenius\Programs\Key.txt

2. In the Windows operating system go to: Windows | Settings | System |  and select "Restore Factory Defaults"
3. Enter 1234 in the "Do you wish to Proceed?" prompt and then pick "Yes."  You may need to pick on the Keyboard icon at the top of the screen to collapse the keyboard before you see the "Yes" button.

The device will perform its operation, this will take about 5 minutes. 
You can pick "Skip" for most of the prompts during the startup process unless you need to (for example) change the time zone.
When you restart the device it will also perform some configuration steps, just follow the prompts

4. Finally, reinstall FieldGenius, Layout or Evidence Recorder from the downloads page linked to below:
