License Notes

Note: Evidence Recorder 7.2.0 is a free upgrade for owners of version 7.0 or higher!

Users with a current Maintenance Subscription and Support Plan (MSSP) contract may contact MicroSurvey for a new registration code for EVR 7. For users who do not have a current MSSP contract, please contact your sales representative for more details. EVR 7.0.0 licenses will run the 7.2.0 version.

If you do not know who your sales representative is, please click on this link and you will directed to the Dealer Locator page.

!*** Existing EVR users should manually record their instrument settings before proceeding with this installation ***!

Step 1: Install Microsoft ActiveSync or Windows Mobile Device Center

In order to install Evidence Recorder onto your hand-held data collector, you must have Microsoft ActiveSync (for Windows XP or earlier) or Microsoft Windows Mobile Device Center (for Windows Vista and 7) installed on your computer. Click here to download these free from Microsoft.

Step 2: Install Evidence Recorder

Evidence Recorder 7.2.0 uses an installer where all devices are available in the same install package. Download the install package below to your computer and run the setup. The install will attempt to connect to your device through Activesync or Windows Mobile Device Center and install the software.

Step 3: Install MicroSurvey Transfer

The MicroSurvey Transfer program provides an easy means of transferring Evidence Recorder project files between your data collector and your desktop computer.

Step 4 (Optional): Install Datum Grid Editor

Only GPS users may require this program. This is a desktop (runs on a PC, not a data collector) program is used to create a subset of a geoid model file.

What is a geoid model?
A geoid model is a file that is used to convert ellipsoidal heights (what GPS measures) into heights based off of "mean sea level" (also called orthometric heights). Orthometric heights are more meaningful to land surveyors than ellipsoidal heights. It is a lot more difficult to find where the ellipsoid is on the earth versus where mean sea level is. After you load the geoid model file onto your data collector, Evidence Recorder will use it to convert GPS-measured ellipsoidal heights to orthometric heights.

Why do I need to install and use the Datum Grid Editor?

GPS Users Only
This is for GPS users only. If you are recording data with a non-GPS instrument such as a total station or robotic total station then you do not need a geoid model and moreover, you don't need the Datum Grid Editor.

Older Data Collectors

In the past, data collectors came with a smaller memory-storage capacity. Geoid model files could easily fill up the entire data collector's hard drive or were even too large to transfer to the device at all.

Because of this we created this utility that makes a subset of the geoid model that is small enough to fit onto a data collector's hard drive. Typically you would create a subset based on the location of the project area. Currently, all MicroSurvey data collectors come with an enormous storage-memory capacity therefore making geoid model subsets unnecessary (now we just copy the entire geoid model file onto the data collector), and that is one of the reasons why we say it is "optional".

If you wish to create a geoid model subset, click on the link below to download the Datum Grid Editor.

Note: The Datum Grid Editor currently only works on North American geoid models.

This subset must then be copied onto your data collector in the following directory, overwriting some of the existing files that are already there:

...\MicroSurvey EVR7\Programs\Mapping

Remember: If you are not collecting data using GPS then you do not need to use a geoid model, and therefore do not need to use Datum Grid Editor. (Another reason why we say it is "optional".)

Download Datum Grid Editor - 110 Megabytes (now you know why you got that high speed connection!)

Step 5 (Optional): Desktop Version

You can install a desktop version of Evidence Recorder to use for training or testing. The desktop version now Windows Vista and 7 compatible. There is no need to run Evidence Recorder as an administrator.
